The Passionate Pen: How to Write a Love Letter
The first love letter ever written went something like this:
You're the only guy in the world for me. XOXO
There is no record of the recipient's reaction, one can assume by the fact you're here to read this that their relationship bore fruit.
Chalk one up for their dating service.
Since then, composing a billet-doux has become somewhat more complicated and, in this era of e-mail and text messaging, perhaps even a lost art. ("ur a qt – want 2 hook up?" might not quite have the same effect as "My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun." ) Getting your fondest feelings down on paper is never easy, but here are a few things to keep in mind when Cupid calls for postage due.
Set the scene
Find some quiet time to yourself. Distractions can frighten your muse away. To help you get into the mood, it never hurts to surround yourself with a few romantic touches like fresh flowers, a lighted candle and soft music. The right ambience can do as much to inspire your prose as it does to enhance a kiss. If you find yourself paralyzed before an empty page, the trick is to just dive in and start writing. Jot down a simple phrase or an idea … anything that comes to mind. Free associate and just keep your pen moving. Everything you scribble can be embellished, moved around or discarded later. Once you start filling up the paper, the words will come easier.
Pen and paper
Wile the right message scrawled in crayon on a laundry ticket may melt a heart, as in fine dining, presentation always matters. No, you don't have to go for quill and vellum, but find some good quality stationary and a writing implement with a little flair. And in this exercise, penmanship and spelling count. It's a good idea to write your first draft on anything handy and when you're happy with the result, copy it elegantly onto your paper of choice.
The write stuff
The single most important piece of advice to take to heart is to write your letter in your own style. Don't worry about being judged on your literary merits. You're writing to an audience of one and, next to a diary, this is the medium best-suited for your most intimate expression. As Mark Twain wrote in his autobiography, "The frankest and freest product of the human mind and heart is a love letter; the writer gets his limitless freedom of statement and expression from his sense that no stranger is going to see what he is writing."
Take advantage of that freedom and speak to the nuances of your relationship. It's really the hundreds of little things that add up to a great love. Talk about his little mannerisms that you find so appealing. Remember one of your adventures together or relive one of those moments when time stood still. A love letter should almost be meaningless to anyone but the two of you. Hit it, Cole.
The way you wear your hat
The way you sip your tea
The memory of all that
no they can't take that away from me
